Breast Cancer UK’s #DitchTheJunk campaign is aimed at raising awareness about the ever expanding number of synthetic chemicals found in cosmetics and personal care products. Scientists have discovered evidence that some of these chemicals have been linked to adverse health effects including breast cancer.
However, the good news is that a recent study, led by researchers from the University of California, Berkeley, showed that it is possible to reduce our body burden of certain toxic chemicals, in as little as three days, simply by avoiding products known to contain them.
Like the vast majority of us, I use a deodorant or antiperspirant on a daily basis, and often reapply it during the day; let’s face it who wants to smell sweaty? Yet one of the most harmful chemicals that both men and women put on their bodies is contained in deodorants.
Deodorant is a product that inhibits your body’s natural secretion of toxins. An antiperspirant and deodorant will clog your skin follicles so that you’re not able to sweat as much as your body requires. On top of inhibiting your body’s natural cleansing and detoxifying process, deodorants and antiperspirants also release a multitude of harmful chemicals into our bodies.
Amongst others, #DitchTheJunk tells us to watch out for Triclosan (a known endocrine-disrupting chemicals – EDC – or carcinogen, which may be linked to breast cancer) and Aluminium salts (pore blockers) in deodorants and antiperspirants. The US Food and Drug Administration has even classified Triclosan as a pesticide, yet it is in the majority of brand name deodorants!
So, What’s New Beauty Reviews decided to road test and review Salt of the Earth Classic Natural Deodorant and Native Unearthed Crystal Deodorant with Aloe Vera. Both are natural crystal deodorants, unisex, and are produced by British owned companies.
Salt of the Earth Classic is made from pure potassium alum. Potassium alum is a natural mineral salt that has apparently been used as a natural deodorant for hundreds of years in the Far East. It works by leaving a microscopic layer of mineral salts on your skin. These mineral salts inhibit the growth of odour causing bacteria leaving you feeling fresh and scent free. Alum is fragrance free, colour free and does not block your skin’s pores, like aluminium. The same goes for Native Unearthed, but which also contains a hint of aloe vera for moisturising & hydration.
Salt of the Earth Classic won Best Natural Deodorant in the JaneyLeeGrace.com Platinum Awards 2013 and other accolades.

They are both 100% natural, not tested on animals, suitable for vegetarians & vegans, unscented, suitable for children 6+ and (most importantly) free from Aluminium Chlorohydrate, Alcohol, CFC’s, Propellents, Paragons, Perfumes, Triclosan & Mineral Oils.
I can tell you, they really do work and provide me with both long lasting protection against BO and no unsightly white marks – long lasting too 🙂 They take a little getting used to compared to conventional products, as you need to apply them to wet skin or simply moisten the tip, but if the alternative is applying harmful chemicals to you skin, then the effort has got to be worth it.
I wished I’d discovered this easy way to #DitchTheJunk years ago!
